Role Overview

The Health Services Director provides strategic and operational leadership for the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Health Services department while also delivering direct patient care. This position supports student health, wellness, and academic success through both clinical services and administrative leadership.

The role combines medical practice with executive-level department oversight, including staff supervision, fiscal planning, policy development, and campus-wide health initiatives.

Responsibilities

Medical Care (60%)

  • Provide direct patient care to university students
  • Support student wellness and healthcare access
  • Deliver primary healthcare services within a college health environment

Department Administration (25%)

  • Lead Health Services strategic direction and departmental operations
  • Collaborate with Medical Director and Laboratory Director on policy development and implementation
  • Oversee medical services including:
    • Surgical and anesthesia services
    • Infection control programming
    • Clinical lab and diagnostic imaging services
  • Supervise medical operations involving physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, dieticians, technologists, and x-ray staff
  • Oversee campus public health information and communication
  • Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, and Student Service Fee processes
  • Lead long-range fiscal planning
  • Represent Health Services on university and community committees

Staff Supervision (10%)

  • Supervise professional staff
  • Conduct performance reviews and coaching
  • Participate in hiring and personnel management
  • Lead staff meetings and departmental retreats

Planning & Development (5%)

  • Monitor quality improvement and peer review programs
  • Oversee medical record audits and utilization reviews
  • Develop or approve nursing protocols
  • Collaborate with University of Minnesota Health System initiatives

Qualifications

Required

  • Primary healthcare provider credentials
  • Board certification
  • Current unrestricted Minnesota license
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience

Preferred

  • Certified Nurse Practitioner or Doctor of Medicine
  • Family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics specialty
  • Administrative leadership experience in clinical settings
  • Staff supervision and personnel management experience
  • Public health and infectious disease experience

Compensation

Salary range: $143,293 – $180,000 annually depending on qualifications and experience.
